- By Train: The nearest railway station is Khajuraho (40 km away), or you can also reach Satna Junction (75 km away). From both locations, direct buses and private taxis are available to Panna.
- By Air: The closest airport is Khajuraho Airport, from where you can hire a cab to reach the reserve.
- By Road: Well-connected roads ensure a smooth drive to Panna Tiger Reserve from major cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, and Satna.
Best Time to Visit & Safari Timings
Panna Tiger Reserve offers safaris in two shifts:
- Morning Safari: 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM
- Evening Safari: 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM
For the best chance to spot tigers, visiting in summer (March–June) is ideal, as tigers are more active around water sources. However, the winter months (October–February) offer a pleasant climate and stunning greenery.
Accommodation Options in Panna
Staying overnight is recommended to enjoy a complete safari experience. Here are some options:
- Luxury Resorts: MP Tourism resorts and private lodges offer premium stays, with prices ranging from ₹6,000 to ₹33,000 per night.
- Budget Homestays: Recently, homestays near Madla Gate have gained popularity. One such stay, Hill View Pancham Singh Homestay, is just 300 meters from the entrance and offers rooms for around ₹2,000 per night.
- Local Dhaba Options: If you prefer budget dining, local dhabas near the entry gates serve both veg and non-veg meals at affordable prices.
Booking Your Safari
To enjoy a seamless safari experience, it’s essential to book your slot in advance. You can book:
- Online: Through the MP Tourism website
- Offline: By contacting local tour guides or booking directly at the entry gate
- Sharing Options: If you’re traveling solo or in a small group, you can share a jeep to split the cost.
- Private Jeep Booking: A full jeep (1–6 persons) costs ₹4,430 on weekdays and ₹4,730 on weekends.
Exploring the Wilderness: My Safari Experience
At 6:00 AM, my safari began at Madla Gate, one of the main entry points to the reserve. Our guide, Kamlesh Prajapati, shared insights about the rich biodiversity of Panna, which includes:
- 46 species of mammals (including tigers, leopards, and deer)
- 300+ species of birds
- Teak-dominated forests and scenic landscapes
We ventured into Ken Valley, a breathtaking area with hills on one side and the Ken River, the lifeline of Panna, flowing gracefully on the other. As we moved deeper, we passed through different terrains—woodlands, grasslands, and rocky plateaus—each offering unique flora and fauna.
Wild Encounters & The Thrill of Tracking a Tiger
Despite the excitement, spotting a tiger is never guaranteed. Our guide explained how experienced trackers identify their presence through:
- Alarm Calls: Langurs, peacocks, and sambars alert the jungle when a predator is near.
- Pugmarks & Scratch Marks: Tigers mark their territory by scratching trees and rubbing their scent.
- Watering Holes: During summer, tigers often visit limited water sources.
Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side that day, and we returned without a tiger sighting. However, the experience of being deep in the wilderness, observing various animals, and learning about the ecosystem made it all worthwhile.
Additional Activities: Ken River Boating
Apart from safaris, Panna offers a unique boating experience on Ken River, where you can spot crocodiles basking along the shores. The boating charges are only ₹50 per person, making it an affordable add-on to your trip.
